Maybe you’re new to the concept of miles. Or perhaps you’re that hardcore chaser.
You know the type - squeezing value out of the best credit cards in Singapore. Camping for promos. Memorising spreadsheet formulas by heart.
Either way, your patience and discipline have paid off - you’re sitting on a solid stash of KrisFlyer miles. Your dream business or first class flight is finally within reach.
But here’s the catch: how do you actually use KrisFlyer miles wisely to extract maximum value?
That’s where this guide comes in.
From booking award flights and upgrades to tours and attractions, here’s how to stretch every mile:
But Hang On, How Do KrisFlyer Miles Work?
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of redemptions, let’s do a quick recap (or an intro if you’re new) on how KrisFlyer miles actually work.
Just think of them as a loyalty currency.
You earn them by flying with Singapore Airlines. You can also convert credit card points. Or even book activities and experiences on platforms like Pelago - part of the SIA Group.
When it comes to KrisFlyer miles redemption, though, we've got to say not all options are created equal. Some give you great value, others less so.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Flights: Redeeming miles for flights is usually the most "worth it". One KrisFlyer mile is worth about 1.5 to 2 cents (SGD).
Retail spending: You can use miles for shopping or everyday purchases. But that drops to around 1 cent (SGD) or less per mile.
Ultimately, it comes down to your goals. Are you chasing maximum value, or just looking to offset costs? There's no wrong decision here.
How to Use KrisFlyer Miles to Book Flights
Okay, now on to the real business - redeeming KrisFlyer miles for flights.
And the best way to do it?
It’s pretty simple.
Just head to the official Singapore Airlines website
Log in to your KrisFlyer account.
Go to the flight booking page and click “Redeem Flights”.
Enter your flight details and select your flights on Singapore Airlines.
Voila, that's it.
If you’re unsure how many miles you need for a free flight, check out the Singapore Airlines miles calculator.
It’s ultra-useful (and super addictive too) when it comes to figuring out the number of miles you’ll need per destination.
Oh, and here’s a snapshot below to give you an idea of how many KrisFlyer miles you’d need to redeem Economy Class Saver award tickets for return trips.
Just to keep things simple, we’re showing details for Saver instead of Advantage (we’ll explain the differences later).
Economy Saver Award Examples
Destination | KrisFlyer Miles Needed |
|---|---|
Singapore to Kuala Lumpur | 17,000 miles |
Singapore to Phuket | 27,000 miles |
Singapore to Tokyo | 54,000 miles |
Singapore to Seoul | 54,000 miles |
Singapore to Dubai | 58,000 miles |
Singapore to Cape Town | 58,000 miles |
Singapore to Barcelona | 84,000 miles |
Singapore to London | 84,000 miles |
Economy Saver vs Economy Advantage
So, what’s the difference between the Economy Saver award ticket and the Economy Advantage award ticket?
Firstly, the Saver ticket offers lower mileage costs.
But the trade-off?
That means limited flexibility and fewer amenities. For example, it’s notoriously difficult to find Saver seats unless you book nearly a year in advance (355 days, to be precise).
If you don’t have flexibility in your travel plans, Saver might not work for you.
Advantage tickets will cost you much more in terms of miles.
But you get a much wider selection of seats across flights.
Changes and cancellations are also more flexible, with lower fees. Plus, you can enjoy more complimentary stopovers on round-trip tickets.
The caveat?
You’ll need to fork out significantly more miles - about 60% on average.
Not cheap at all.
For instance, an Economy Advantage ticket to Phuket will set you back 50,000 miles. That’s only slightly more than what you’d need for a Business Saver award ticket to the same destination.
You’ll need to decide if that extra flexibility is worth it for you.
However, remember we’re mostly talking about round-trip tickets. If you’re comfortable paying for one half of your journey, there can be some decent one-way options.
For instance:
An Economy Saver ticket to Bali starts from just 8,500 miles one-way.
A Business Saver award ticket costs 21,000 miles
Business Saver Award Examples
To paint a clearer picture, here are round-trip Business Saver award ticket requirements:
Destination | KrisFlyer Miles Needed |
|---|---|
Singapore to Kuala Lumpur | 42,000 miles |
Singapore to Phuket | 48,000 miles |
Singapore to Tokyo | 104,000 miles |
Singapore to Seoul | 104,000 miles |
Singapore to Dubai | 113,000 miles |
Singapore to Cape Town | 113,000 miles |
Singapore to Barcelona | 207,000 miles |
Singapore to London | 207,000 miles |
Heads-up: From 1 November 2025, the number of miles required for award redemptions and upgrades on Singapore Airlines will increase.
Business Saver vs Business Advantage
When it comes to Business Class, the story is similar to Economy.
Saver gives you the best value. Advantage is all about flexibility.
For Saver fares, you’ll need to book well in advance (at least 11 to 12 months ahead).
Advantage tickets are much more lenient when it comes to changes and refunds, and they also offer wider seat availability.
Round-trip Advantage tickets even give you up to two free stopovers per journey.
On the flip side, Saver fares in Business Class only allow one stopover.
Of course, Advantage tickets cost a lot more miles.
Here’s how that plays out for a round-trip flight to London:
Ticket Type | Destination | KrisFlyer Miles Needed |
|---|---|---|
Business Saver Award Ticket | Singapore to London | 207,000 miles |
Business Advantage Award Ticket | Singapore to London | 246,000 miles |
The same logic applies to First Class and Suites.
Here’s how those compare:
Ticket Type | Destination | KrisFlyer Miles Needed |
|---|---|---|
First Saver Award Ticket | Singapore to London | 282,000 miles |
First Advantage Award Ticket | Singapore to London | 451,000 miles |
Saver vs Advantage Summary
Just to recap, here's a quick summary of the differences between Saver and Advantage tickets when flying on Singapore Airlines:
Category | Saver | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
Miles Required | Lower (base chart level) | 60% more miles on average |
Seat Availability | Limited; popular routes often waitlist | Wider availability, easier to confirm |
Date Changes (all classes) | USD 25 per change | Free date changes |
Route, Cabin, or Award Type Changes | USD 25 per change | USD 25 per change |
Redeposit of Miles (upgrades/awards) | USD 75 fee | USD 50 fee (lower) |
Stopovers | 1 on round-trip (none one-way) | 2 on round-trip; 1 on one-way |
Long story short: if you plan well (and in advance), Saver award tickets will give you the best value for your KrisFlyer miles.
Here’s another example: 84,000 miles can get you a round-trip Business Class ticket for two to Bali. A Singapore Airlines flight would cost you roughly SGD 3,000 (or more) for the same tickets.
Whether you think it’s worth flying Business Class to Bali from Singapore is another discussion.
But you get the idea.
Even if you only have enough miles for Economy Class, it’s still worth saving money on flights.
At the end of the day, though, seasoned miles chasers will know that redeeming long-haul Business or First Class awards is the ultimate goal - that’s for sure.
Take note: if you fail to cancel your flight or miss it completely, a no-show fee applies — USD 300 for First and Business Class, USD 200 for Premium Economy, and USD 100 for Economy. A partial refund of miles is provided alongside the fee.
Tips for Claiming KrisFlyer Miles (And Not Missing Out)
Booking Partner Flights
There are so many ways you can redeem your KrisFlyer miles.
And one of the best is booking partner carriers. Not many know this, but you can use your miles on all Star Alliance airlines, as well as partners like Vistara and Virgin Australia.
For that, though, there’s a separate award chart, which usually requires more miles than a regular SQ flight.
So why would you do this?
Maybe you want to get to a dream destination Singapore Airlines doesn’t fly to. Or perhaps you want to mix and match airlines.
Just remember: most partner airlines only offer “Saver” level awards (or their equivalent). So always check if the redemption is worth the value before booking.
Taxes and Fees
The flights may be “free,” but what many folks don’t mention is that you’ll still need to pay taxes and fees out of pocket (in cold, hard cash).
Your miles cover the base fare, sure. But you’ll also pay for things like airport taxes and fuel surcharges.
The good news? Singapore Airlines scrapped fuel surcharges way back in 2017 to simplify pricing - so you’ll only be paying taxes.
But yes, don’t be shocked when you see a checkout payment for taxes even after redeeming your KrisFlyer miles.
Plan Early & Waitlisting
Planning is your superpower, especially when it comes to redemptions.
Award seats are highly competitive (after all, you’re not the only one dreaming of a First Class ticket to New York).
As mentioned earlier, book as early as possible when the 355-day window opens.
If not, you may need to join the KrisFlyer miles redemption waitlist. You can waitlist for both Saver and Advantage awards, and your miles won’t be deducted at this stage.
The catch?
Your booking will only be confirmed about two weeks before departure, via email. You’ll then have roughly 24 hours to confirm the flight.
There’s no guarantee your waitlist will clear. So always, always have backup plans.
Pro tip: if you’re booking for a group, try to waitlist everyone together in one booking. That way, you won’t end up in a situation where only half the group gets confirmed.
Ultimately, redeeming miles can be frustrating, but flexibility pays off. Consider alternative dates or even different destinations.
Spontaneous Escapes
From time to time, Singapore Airlines also releases Spontaneous Escapes deals.
These are typically monthly promos where selected routes are offered at 30% fewer miles (sometimes even 40% if you’re lucky).
It’s by far one of the best ways to redeem KrisFlyer miles at short notice.
Just take note: these promos are only valid for specific dates and flights, and there are no refunds or cancellations.
Using Miles for Others
If you’re wondering whether you can transfer your KrisFlyer miles to a spouse or family member, the answer is no.
But you can add up to five redemption nominees to your account.
This means you can redeem KrisFlyer miles for someone else without transferring miles out of your account. You simply book the flight of their choice directly in their name.
Mix Miles and Cash for Tickets
Ah, but what if you don’t have enough miles for a full free ticket?
That’s where the Mix KrisFlyer miles and cash feature comes in.
It lets you offset the total cost of your ticket with miles, then top up the rest with a debit or credit card.
A few things to note:
You can offset your fare starting from 1,000 KrisFlyer miles (including taxes and surcharges).
Exact miles required will vary depending on currency conversions.
Bookings are only valid on the official Singapore Airlines website and app.
You can use this for yourself or any KrisFlyer redemption nominees.
Pro tip: you can even buy miles if you’re short. The cost per mile is a little high, but in some cases, it might be worth it to reach a certain award threshold. Just take note: you must already have at least half the required miles for an award flight or upgrade before making the purchase at a set price.
How to Redeem KrisFlyer Miles on Scoot Flights
Okay, so redeeming KrisFlyer miles on Scoot is nothing new. The scheme has been around since 2015.
Back then, miles were valued at a fixed 1 cent each, so it wasn’t the most appealing option redemption-wise.
But all that changed in August 2025.
Now there’s a Scoot KrisFlyer miles redemption chart with fixed mileage prices.
And the good news for miles enthusiasts?
Redemptions now start from just 1,500 miles. There’s even a handy PDF that splits the official chart into zones with different destinations.
This is a huge improvement in terms of maximising your miles.
For example, if a Scoot flight used to cost SGD 150, you’d have to fork out 15,000 miles. Now that same ticket is roughly 8,000 miles flat.
It’s also perfect for dreamy destinations outside of SIA’s network. Think beach spots like Okinawa and Jeju, or laid-back cities like Chiang Mai.
How cool is that?
Want the full lowdown? You might want to check out our guide on why you should redeem KrisFlyer miles on Scoot in 2025.
It may very well just tip the scale for you in terms of choosing your next flight.
Scoot Saver vs Advantage
Similar to the Singapore Airlines Saver and Advantage scheme, Scoot’s chart also has two tiers: Scoot Saver awards and Scoot Advantage awards.
Saver awards require fewer miles but come with limited seat availability.
Advantage awards cost more miles, but they’re available even if Saver seats are gone.
The other rules are mostly the same:
Tickets are non-refundable except in special circumstances.
Advantage awards don’t offer extra flexibility beyond seat availability.
How to Book Scoot Awards
To redeem Scoot flights, log in with your KrisFlyer account on the Scoot website.
There’s a dedicated booking interface where you pay with miles.
As with Singapore Airlines flights, you’ll still need to pay taxes in cash.
