Peak Tram Hong Kong (2025): Tickets, Hours, Route, & Best Things to Do

Last updated: 2025年11月25日9 minutes

Collage of Peak Tram Hong Kong attractions: tram ride, Peak Tower, wax museum selfie spot, and scenic walk under banyan trees.

No trip to Hong Kong is complete without a ride on the Peak Tram.

For over 135 years, this iconic funicular has hauled visitors up the dizzying slopes of Victoria Peak in under 10 minutes. The journey is steep, scenic, and thrilling. It's part history lesson, part mini adventure.

More than transport, it’s a must-do experience that belongs at the top of every Hong Kong itinerary.

Planning your first ride? This 2025 guide gives you everything you need, from tickets and timings to insider tips, so you can make the most of your climb to the city’s most famous view.

A Historical Look Back at The Peak Tram Hong Kong

The Peak Tram first opened in 1888 as Asia’s very first funicular, whisking Hong Kong’s elite up the steep slopes of Victoria Peak.

Back then, it was more than transport; it was a status symbol. Picture top-hatted colonial officials and wealthy merchants riding in wooden carriages, with the Governor himself reserving the front seats until just two minutes before departure.

Over the years, the tram has proven remarkably resilient.

It survived World War II, when the engine room was damaged, and still returned to service in 1945.

Later, a 1989 upgrade introduced bigger, weatherproof cars and computerised controls to cope with the city’s humid summers and fierce typhoons. Most recently, a HKD 799 million (USD 102 million) overhaul in 2022 brought sleek “Peak Tram Green” cars, a stronger track, and expanded stations.

Today, each tram holds 210 passengers with wide doors and step-free access, while the Central terminus now includes interactive exhibits and air-conditioned space for 1,300.

Despite all the upgrades, the Peak Tram Hong Kong still carries its original charm. It's a moving time capsule that’s seen the city change from colonial outpost to global hub.

How Much Does it Cost to Ride the Peak Tram in Hong Kong?

The ticket price varies depending on your age group.

Children under 3 ride free (with an adult). Kids aged 3–11 and seniors 65+ pay the same discounted rate. Prices also differ for round trip vs. one way, and whether you add Sky Terrace 428.

How to Get to the Peak Tram (Lower Terminus)

Curious about how to get to the Peak Tram? The tram's Lower Terminus is located at 33 Garden Road, Central, which is right at the heart of Hong Kong's business district.

  • MTR: From Central Station Exit J2, it’s a 10-15 min steady uphill walk past the Bank of China Tower. From Admiralty, walk 15 mins via Hong Kong Park. Note that shade during the walk is limited.

  • Bus 15C: From the Star Ferry piers, ride the open-top bus (HKD 5.4 / USD 0.69). Runs 10am-11pm every 15-30 mins, stopping at the tram station. The bus operates to Garden Road Lower Terminus; check return times after 10:30pm.

  • On Foot: A 15-20 min uphill walk (1 km) from Central. From the airport, take the Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, then walk or taxi 5 mins.

  • Taxi: From Central, HKD 30-40 (USD 4-5). Always use metered taxis or rideshares.

At the Lower Terminus, follow the signage (and expect a queue). With a ticket or Octopus, head straight to boarding; otherwise, buy first. Inside you’ll find displays, old photos, a souvenir shop, and restrooms.

What To Expect When Riding the Tram to Victoria Peak

Photo: @mansonyms on Instagram

At the Lower Terminus, queues are common but move fast since each tram holds 200+ people. The revamped station has air-con waiting areas, free Wi-Fi, and exhibits like old photos and a replica tram.

The ride itself is quick, climbing 396m at a 25.7° gradient. Seats face downhill, so going up feels like riding backwards. Hold the rail, enjoy the harbour views. Don’t miss the quirky Peak Tram illusion, where the slope tricks your eyes so that the skyscrapers seem to tilt and lean sideways, as if they’re toppling into the hill.

For the best harbour views, sit right-hand side (when facing uphill).

No seat?

Front standing area is best for video; hold devices securely on steep pull-aways for the best videos and Timelapse's. At busy times many ride standing, but the wave-shaped floor and handles make it safe and stable. Smooth yet steep, it feels a bit like a tilted lift; it's a mini thrill, especially on the first climb. The tram is safe for all ages, from kids to expectant mums. However, it's advised to consult a doctor before riding the tram.

You’ll arrive at the Upper Peak Tram Station inside the Peak Tower. From here, take escalators or lifts into the mall or out to the terrace. Just outside is Lion’s Pavilion, a small Chinese-style gazebo with skyline views.

Fun Things to do at Victoria Peak

The Peak isn't just about the tram ride.

It's a whole destination with plenty of fun things to see and do. Here are some attractions you shouldn't miss.

1. Peak Tower & Peak Galleria (with Rooftop Deck)

The two main hubs at the summit are the wok-shaped Peak Tower, where the tram arrives, and the Peak Galleria across the plaza.

The Tower is home to souvenir shops, interactive exhibits, a VR zone, and restaurants like Bubba Gump. The Galleria offers retail stores, a food court, and cafés. However, the highlight is definitely the free Rooftop Deck, a hidden gem with panoramic views almost as good as Sky Terrace 428. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s worth stopping by for the air-con, coffee, and those skyline views.

2. Madame Tussauds Hong Kong

Want to snap a selfie with Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, or Lady Gaga?

Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, located on the lower levels of the Peak Tower, showcases around 100 figures spanning kung fu legends, K-pop idols, and Hollywood stars.

New faces are added regularly, so there’s always something fresh. Make sure to snap a pic with your favourite Asian film icons and global chart-toppers.

3. Monopoly Dreams Hong Kong

Step into the world’s first Monopoly-themed attraction, right at The Peak.

The Monopoly Dreams Hong Kong immersive space brings the classic board game to life with interactive zones, oversized game pieces, and themed experiences. Explore Mr. Monopoly’s lavish lifestyle, try your luck with game-inspired challenges, and even hop on a 4DX ride to chase down a diamond thief.

Highlights include the world’s largest car token, nostalgic nods to the original board, and plenty of photo ops.

4. Peak Circle Walk (Lugard Road Trail)

Photo: @clive_katagou on Instagram

The Lugard Road Trail is one of the best free activities at The Peak.

This 3.5 km paved loop circles the summit in about 45-60 minutes. Starting near the Peak Tower, follow signs for Lugard Road or Harlech Road.

Photo: @torngtorng1019 on Instagram

The trail offers sweeping views over Central, Kowloon, and Victoria Harbour, mixed with quiet forest stretches full of birds and butterflies

5. Victoria Peak Garden & Mount Austin

Photo: @rogeralicia on Instagram

For a quieter break from the crowds, head 15-20 minutes uphill from Peak Tower to this former Governor’s lodge garden on Mount Austin Road.

Today it’s a peaceful public park with lawns, gazebos, and colonial touches. The views face the South China Sea, offering a different perspective from the main lookout.

It’s perfect for a picnic or a calm stroll, and if you keep walking further up Mount Austin Road, you’ll reach Victoria Peak Garden, sitting about 552-metres above sea level. It's one of the highest accessible points on The Peak.

Where to Eat at Victoria Peak Hong Kong

All that sightseeing can work up an appetite. Luckily, Victoria Peak is home to a wide range of dining options. Here are the best food and dining spots at The Peak.

6. The Peak Lookout

Photo: @millepineberryon Instagram

For a historic Hong Kong experience, head to The Peak Lookout, a 1940s former tram engineer’s lodge at 121 Peak Road.

Its colonial charm, garden terrace, and views of the South China Sea set the scene for a romantic or special meal. The menu is eclectic, with Asian and Western dishes, and it’s especially known for its curries and barbecue. Some standouts include the Singaporean laksa, Indian chicken curry, and chargrilled barbecue platters.

7. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Photo: @abbiedinesout on Instagram

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co is a family favourite on the top floor of the Peak Tower. This Forrest Gump–themed spot serves American comfort food with panoramic skyline views.

Go for the Shrimper’s Heaven platter (a sampler of fried, grilled, and coconut shrimp) or the baby back ribs if you’re craving smoky BBQ. The vibe is casual and fun, and you’ll want to save space for their famous chocolate brownie dessert.

8. Rajasthan Rifles

Photo: @lastbitematters on Instagram

Rajasthan Rifles is a hidden gem by Black Sheep Hospitality that serves Anglo-Indian cuisine in the style of a 1920s officers’ mess.

Expect colonial décor, hearty curries, biryanis, and spicy starters. The butter chicken is a standout, while the chicken tikka and goat seekh kebab are crowd-pleasers.

Pair your meal with their signature Peach Shandy (gin, white ale, peach purée & soda) on the terrace for a unique dining experience with a view. It’s a top pick if you love Indian food or want something different at The Peak.

9. FALCONE Peak

FALCONE Peak brings a fresh slice of Napoli to Victoria Peak.

This relaxed, neo-Neapolitan pizzeria in Peak Galleria specialises in handmade pizzas, fresh pastas, and Italian soul food. Favorites include the Diavola pizza (spicy salami, mozzarella, tomato), Salsiccia e Zucca with Japanese pumpkin & gorgonzola, and Strozzapreti Basilico e Tonno (basil pesto pasta with tuna). Want something lighter? Try the Zuppa di Ceci e Vongole, a hearty chickpea and clam soup.

Finish with something sweet like the Torta dell’Ubriacone, a citrus-amaretto cake topped with whipped cream. Prices are mid-to-high, but for what you get, it's well worth it.

10. La Vache! Peak

Photo: @plsforkoff on Instagram

La Vache! Peak is a must for fans of French bistro dining.

This stylish spot in the Peak Tower specialises in a classic Parisian set menu: a crisp green salad followed by unlimited thin-cut French fries and a perfectly cooked entrecôte steak with their signature house sauce. The menu is simple but done exceptionally well, and portions are generous.

Round off your meal with their indulgent profiteroles or a slice of rich Paris-Brest. Pair it with a glass of Bordeaux or a classic French apéritif for the full experience. Prices are mid-to-high, but the value is excellent given the quality and setting.
